Did you know that October is National Dental Hygiene Month? Most people think of tricks and treats this Halloween season, but here are a few other things to keep in mind while you’re costume prepping this year:

Brushing

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), not only should you be brushing your teeth every day, but rather you should be brushing at least twice a day, for two minutes at a time! You should use a soft bristled toothbrush, and should brush in circular movements rather than back and forth. Don’t scrub too hard! You can damage your gums, or even start to wear away at your tooth enamel if you’re using too much elbow grease when brushing your teeth.

Flossing

How often do you tell Dr. Perez-Salinas you’ve been flossing regularly, when in fact you’re not even sure where to find dental floss in your home? Flossing is absolutely as important as brushing your teeth! If you brush alone without flossing, you’re only cleaning about 65% of your teeth. Plaque and bacteria can build up between your teeth and along your gum line, leading to dental decay and gum disease. Floss floss floss!

Rinsing

Maybe rinsing your mouth with mouthwash seems a little excessive after brushing and  flossing, but with the right product, you could save yourself (and your loved ones) from suffering through your mid-day bad breath. Rinsing your mouth can help protect you against excess plaque build-up, and reduce your risk of developing gingivitis. Look for a mouthwash with the ADA seal of approval for best results.

Chewing

October means Halloween, right? Inevitably, you’ll be chewing on some extra candy this month, but if it’s not possible to brush your teeth soon after, chew a piece of sugarless gum instead. The gum will help you salivate more, and your saliva will then work to neutralize the acids in your mouth that develop after you eat or drink.

Remember, the best way to take care of your oral health year-round is to be proactive about your oral health regime, and to schedule and maintain regular visits with your Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas. If you have any questions about National Dental Hygiene Month, or to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas, call 510-243-0213 today!

Summer Survival Guide

Summer Survival Guide

Summer Survival Guide

Preventative Dentistry Pinole

Summertime, and the living’s easy! Just make sure that easy living doesn’t compromise your dental health. Here are a few things to keep in mind when keeping yourself happy and healthy this summer season:

Chlorinated pool water is acidic, and believe it or not, can actually damage your teeth! It’s hard to imagine not swallowing a little pool water when you’re splashing around and having fun, but take the time to rinse your mouth out with plain, filtered water afterwards. Not only will it help neutralize some of that lingering acid, but will also help keep you hydrated!

Also consider some of the dental injuries that could result from some careless slip-ups and fall-downs around the pool this summer. Remember, walk, don’t run, on slippery pool perimeters, and remind everyone to be attentive to their surroundings when they’re playing in and around the pool.

Snacks and summer munchies will keep you fueled for all your summer fun! It’s important to be mindful of the kinds of food you’re consuming, as well as remembering you good oral cleaning habits in between those snack breaks. Sugarless gum is a great way to neutralize acid in the mouth that’s caused from frequent snacking, and brushing and flossing regularly are the best way to ensure you stay cavity-free all summer!

Regular dental check-ups are the only way to ensure your mouth is in its best shape, and to be sure there are no cavities or other dangers lurking in the deepest corners of those bright smiles. Don’t skip summer dental check-ups because of summer vacation plans or other activities – you deserve the best dental care that Pinole has to offer, so be sure to schedule your summer dental appointments with Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas.

Dental Check-Ups

General Dentistry El Sobrante

When most people look at their calendar for the year, they don’t often note how many times they’ll be visiting the dentist as a part of their regular check-up routine. The problem that occurs from this general pattern is that often, when people do visit their general dentist, it’s because they’ve already developed an oral health issue that very well could have been prevented in the first place. Irregularity of dental check-ups is one of the biggest sources of oral health problems that El Sobrante dentist Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas runs in to with patients.

So… how often should you visit Dr. Perez-Salinas?

Adults and children alike should schedule dental check-ups on a regular basis. For those people with a preexisting oral health issue, or one that comes to light as a part of one of your dental check-ups, El Sobrante dentist Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas might request to see you more frequently. For those who proceed with routine, Dr. Perez-Salinas will still probably hope you schedule an appointment at least twice a year. Regular visits to Advanced Dentistry El Sobrante are the best way to ensure your oral health is in top condition, so that your overall health and wellness are aiding you in being the best that you can be!

If nothing hurts, why do I need to see Dr. Perez-Salinas?

Believe it or not, pain is one of the last conditions to surface around oral health issues. Tooth pain is often a serious side effect of cavities that have already become deep enough to disturb gum tissue, meaning treatment might very well be a root canal, or even tooth removal to ultimately destroy the infection. Thankfully, by attending regular dental appointments with Dr. Perez-Salinas, you can ensure that your oral health is not in jeopardy in the face of cavities.

The truth is, there are few things more important than your health and wellness, and one of the best ways to make sure you’re in top shape, is to start with your mouth! Regular dental check-ups are a vital step in keeping your healthiest self, so don’t hesitate to schedule your next dental check-up with El Sobrante dentist Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas today!

What Your Teeth Say About Your Overall Health

What Your Teeth Say About Your Overall Health

What Your Teeth Say About Your Overall Health

General Health and Wellness El Sobrante

Taking care of your teeth does more for you than just keep your smile shining; oral health can help you prevent medical diseases far beyond tooth decay, and the condition of your teeth is often a telling sign of certain medical problems arising in other parts of your body.

Anxiety or Sleep Disorders

Do you find yourself waking up with a sore jaw? Are you perhaps grinding your teeth throughout the day? These could be signs of a sleep disorder as teeth grinding is statistically more frequently found in those who also suffer from sleep apnea. People who suffer from severe anxiety might take to teeth grinding as a subconscious way to cope with stress- a very dangerous habit to develop!

Eating Disorders or Poor Diet

Enamel erosion is often easy for a dentist to spot, and enamel erosion from purging caused by certain eating disorders like bulimia or anorexia may cause the dentist to begin to ask questions of the patient’s health and well being.

Much like oral problems caused by eating disorders, a poor diet can lead to discolored, defenseless, and cavity-filled teeth. Dark liquids like coffee, tea, or sodas can easily stain teeth, and the sugars in food and drinks can cause cavities. Those patients who suffer from alcohol abuse are also likely to be noticed by a dentist, as most dentists can still smell the alcohol on a patient’s breath, even hours after consumption.

Heart Disease

Some people may have heart disease or diabetes and be completely unaware! One possible sign to look for is gum problems. Although the connection between gum disease and heart health is not totally clear, professionals do know that those with gum disease are more likely to suffer from diabetes, and those with diabetes are more likely to suffer from gum disease. Brushing and flossing regularly are two ways you can avoid gum disease and keep your oral health in top shape!

If something doesn’t feel quite right in your body, it’s always a good idea to clear up any concerns with a medical or dental doctor. For more information about oral health care in relationship to your overall health and wellbeing, or to schedule your next appointment, call El Sobrante dentist Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas at 510-243-0213 today!

Halloween doesn’t have to be filled with sugar to be sweet! El Sobrante dentist Dr. Dalia Perez- Salinas wants to help you treat your teeth to some spooky and nutritious Halloween fun this year!

Have you ever bobbed for apples? This classic fall game is a great way to get the whole family in the spirit of the season, without jeopardizing your teeth while you’re enjoying the fun! The vitamins and minerals in every apple are a great treat for your whole body, and the apples are naturally sweet so they really taste like a Halloween treat!

Another great Halloween treat is roasted pumpkin seeds – especially those you get from carving a pumpkin yourself! Instead of indulging in sticky chocolates or caramels, consider snacking on a few salted pumpkin seeds to curb your Halloween munchies.

If you’re tasked with bringing snacks to a Halloween party for your friends and family, you can help everyone participate in Halloween fun while sparing their teeth the dangers lurking in sweets. Try crafting some tangerine jack-o-lanterns, or creepy-crawly olives cut like spiders! You could even make some spooky vampire mouths from apple slices – a snack everyone will surely enjoy!

When you do allow yourself to indulge in sugary and not-so-nutritious Halloween treats, remember that most things are okay all in moderation. Follow every sugary snack day with at least 2 minutes of brushing with fluoride toothpaste before bed, and remember that oral hygiene shouldn’t hide away, even in the face of October ghouls and goblins at the end of a Halloween night!

Flossing Tips

Flossing Tips

Flossing Tips

Preventative Dentistry El Sobrante

So what’s the real 4-1-1 on flossing? Flossing is important not only to help remove food that may be stuck between teeth, but also to help scrape and remove plaque that is otherwise left-over after cleaning. Flossing is important when remembering your oral health routine as it can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay that brushing alone might not clear. By being proactive with your flossing, you can avoid being one of the 27% of Americans who lies to their dentists about how often they floss – a lie dentists can easily spot as soon as you open your mouth!

Here are a few tips the ADA recommends about flossing:

Use about 18 inches of floss so that you can use new sections of floss as you move around your mouth.

Wrap the floss around your middle and index fingers, and glide the floss gently in between teeth, forming a ‘C’ shape firmly around each tooth. Use a gentle push-pull motion between teeth to remove any food or plaque stuck between teeth.

Repeat this process around each tooth, and use new sections of floss as you go.

Whatever your technique, remembering to floss every day is one of the best ways you can take care of your mouth! For more tips on flossing, or to schedule your next appointment with your El Sobrante dentist Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas, call 510-243-0213 today!

Vacation and Oral Health

Travel Tips El Sobrante

Just because your family is taking a vacation this summer, doesn’t mean your oral health and wellness should! School’s out for summer, work is hitting a lull in honor of vacation season, and it’s a great time to soak up some sunshine with your loved ones on this year’s family trip!  Before you check out of everyday routine and check into your tropical paradise, foreign excursion, or backyard adventure, consider these easy steps towards maintaining top oral wellness for your teeth and gums this season!

Monitor Your Munchies

Everyone likes to indulge in sugars and sweets- especially on vacation!- but it’s important to remember that you have sensitive teeth that can be subject to decay if they’re not routinely cleaned and cared for. Try to pack healthy snacks when you’re prepping for you vacation so that you have something nutritious to munch on while you’re out on an excursion or lounging on the beach! Limit the time you spend exploring the dessert bar, and remember that it’s best for anyone to snack on sweets around the same time as eating the rest of a meal, rather than waiting until hours later, in order to minimize acid production in the mouth!

Remember Routine

Your whole family is probably going to be exhausted at the end of your long, fun days on the go, so make sure you remember to brush and floss before you crash into bed each night! Being away from home can make slipping out of routine almost more natural than keeping it, but it’s important to remember that plaque and decay never go on vacation, so neither can your healthy habits! Consider using teeth-brushing time as a way for your whole family to debrief about the day passed and to make a plan for the day to come!

Visit Dr. Perez- Salinas Before You Go!

Have you ever heard that the best defense is a good offense? That holds true for dental care too!
