Tips for Healthy Teeth
General Dentistry El Sobrante
Maintaining a strict dental hygiene routine is one of the best ways that you can keep a healthy and happy smile for yourself and for the world. However, have you ever wondered about the little things you do everyday that could be hurting your teeth? More than just brushing and flossing regularly, consider these tricks and tips for keeping your smile safe.
Change your toothbrush regularly, and make sure you’re brushing with a soft-bristled, multi-tufted brush as to avoid rough abrasion on teeth and gums.
Watch what you’re crunching! Chomping on fingernails, ice cubes, or using your teeth as tools to open plastic bags or bottle caps strains your teeth much outside the realms of what they are designed to withstand! Forcing so much pressure on your teeth can easily and immediately cause cracks or fractures.
Refrain from constant acid consumption through sugary drinks like sodas, sports’ drinks, or coffee. Monitor your regular sugar intake through candies and carbohydrates as these too lead to immediate and intense acid production in the mouth – inevitably breaking down tooth enamel and lead to gum erosion, leaving your mouth defenseless against lurking bacteria.
For the best defense against tooth decay, wait about 30 minutes after eating or drinking to brush your teeth. While you’re eating and drinking, acid is created as a part of your body’s natural process to break down food. Immediately brushing after food consumption can allow that acid to break down tooth enamel, rather than scrubbing your enamel clean.

Time to Fill You In on Fluoride (It’s Not Just For Kids!)
Fluoride Preventative Dentistry El Sobrante
Many people are familiar with the health benefits of adding fluoride to drinking water for the strengthening and protection of children’s teeth, but did you know that those same restorative properties of fluoride hold true for adult exposure as well? Researchers are excited to have found increasing evidence suggesting fluoridated tap water not only prevents pediatric cavities, but also prevents tooth decay in adults.
Although the understanding for years has been such that fluoride worked by strengthening teeth while they were still developing, new professional discoveries show that topical fluoride treatments, such as those through toothpaste, mouth rinses, and specialized fluoride treatments, helps to fight oral decay for people of all ages.
If your gums have started to recede from your teeth, you wear braces, have chronic dry mouth, or have had radiation to your head or neck that could have damaged your salivary glands, a fluoride treatment could be a quick and painless first step solution to a better tomorrow!

Vacation and Oral Health
Travel Tips El Sobrante
Just because your family is taking a vacation this summer, doesn’t mean your oral health and wellness should! School’s out for summer, work is hitting a lull in honor of vacation season, and it’s a great time to soak up some sunshine with your loved ones on this year’s family trip! Before you check out of everyday routine and check into your tropical paradise, foreign excursion, or backyard adventure, consider these easy steps towards maintaining top oral wellness for your teeth and gums this season!
Monitor Your Munchies
Everyone likes to indulge in sugars and sweets- especially on vacation!- but it’s important to remember that you have sensitive teeth that can be subject to decay if they’re not routinely cleaned and cared for. Try to pack healthy snacks when you’re prepping for you vacation so that you have something nutritious to munch on while you’re out on an excursion or lounging on the beach! Limit the time you spend exploring the dessert bar, and remember that it’s best for anyone to snack on sweets around the same time as eating the rest of a meal, rather than waiting until hours later, in order to minimize acid production in the mouth!
Your whole family is probably going to be exhausted at the end of your long, fun days on the go, so make sure you remember to brush and floss before you crash into bed each night! Being away from home can make slipping out of routine almost more natural than keeping it, but it’s important to remember that plaque and decay never go on vacation, so neither can your healthy habits! Consider using teeth-brushing time as a way for your whole family to debrief about the day passed and to make a plan for the day to come!

Go Green This Spring
General Dentistry El Sobrante
There are plenty of ways to show your enthusiasm for the spring season and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day without ruining your teeth this holiday! Consider a few new ways to celebrate with friends and family this year.
Green Your Mealtime Without Greening Your Smile
Add some kale or spinach to a smoothie, or smash some avocados on top of your toast for naturally green foods that won’t stain your teeth with the harsh dyes found in artificial food colorings. If that green beer is undeniably calling your name, follow up your holiday festivities with an oral exam with your El Sobrante dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas to ensure your teeth and mouth are well-maintained after an afternoon or two of less-than-ideal oral health influences.
Go Green With Your Oral Health Care
Consider using St. Patrick’s Day as an excuse to help motivate your whole family to “Go Green” with their oral health care! Switch to biodegradable dental floss, and look for toothpaste brands that are natural and non-damaging to the environment. Wooden toothbrushes with natural bristles are also a great way to lessen your carbon footprint and “Go Green” in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day!
Avoid Dental Emergencies
The day after St. Patrick’s Day has become notorious amongst dentists for an abnormally high rate of dental emergencies, as compared to other days throughout the year. Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas understands that accidents happen, but wants to make sure that everyone is on their best behavior during a holiday that might encourage those of-age to participate in of-age activities! If you do by chance find yourself in a dental emergency this St. Patrick’s Day, call Dr. Perez-Salinas to schedule an early appointment so that your smile can be restored and you can be back in action well before the Easter bunny hops your way.

Give Your Valentine a Healthy Smile and some Clean Kisses
to Love this February!
Eye-dry kisses, soft, shy kisses, “Oh hi!” kisses, bye-bye kisses: whatever the occasion, nobody wants to be turned down as they offer a juicy kiss this Valentine’s day! Make sure this doesn’t happen to you by keeping your oral health in top shape, even in the face of some holiday sweet-tooth satisfaction.
Don’t Let Your Kisses be Sour Just Sweet!
Most candies are packed with sugars that can quickly destroy your teeth! The worst offenders of this nasty attack are sour candies, full of citric acids that rapidly destroy your tooth enamel. It’s best to avoid sour candies, from gummies that stick in your teeth easily to hard sour candies that release acid into your mouth continuously for an extended period of time, don’t let your kisses be sour for your Valentine this year!
Crack Down on Sweets that are Tough on Your Teeth
Did you know that Americans consume around 58 million pounds of chocolate between February 1st and February 14th?! That’s a lot of cavities waiting to happen. Consider giving your sweetheart something sweet from the heart this year, instead of giving into the sugar craze the grocery stores might lead you to “buy” in to.
Remember that You’re Someone Special Too
Loving yourself on Valentine’s Day and every other day of the year means taking great care of yourself each and every day and that includes your oral health! By brushing at least twice a day, and remembering to floss daily, you can keep your oral health in lovable condition for yourself and for others! Don’t forget that the healthier you eat by remembering your fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates, the sweeter your kisses will be! Nutrition affects your body’s overall function as well as your oral health, and the best way you can spoil yourself is to maintain daily healthy habits.
You can love your healthy teeth, and your Valentine can love your sweet kisses this February 14th!
We would LOVE to see you soon! Call (510) 243-0213 today to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas
New Year’s Resolutions for Optimal Oral Health
Preventative Dentistry El Sobrante
As the holiday buzz comes to an end, many people are getting into new habits they wish to maintain throughout the new year. When considering your new resolutions, don’t forget to put Dr. Perez-Salinas and your oral health in the forefront of your planning! Here are a few key notes to remember when planning for optimal oral health throughout the new year and for years to come.
Preserve and Improve Your Teeth
Tobacco, wine, and coffee can stain teeth to the point of no return! Consider giving up your addictions as a part of your resolution for a brighter smile, and call Dr. Perez-Salinas to schedule a whitening session if you think your teeth could use a little brightening. Preserve your bite by sleeping with a mouth guard if you know you grind your teeth at night. Dr. Perez-Salinas can evaluate and diagnose your teeth- grinding symptoms, and can quickly get you on track to a peaceful, painless, night’s sleep!
Floss Floss Floss
And buy a new toothbrush! The American Dental Association recommends changing your toothbrush every three months, so if you haven’t done so in a while, the new year is the perfect time to get yourself back on schedule! It’s important to remember that although you may have slacked off during the holidays, brushing three times and flossing at least once per day are both crucial in maintaining oral health.
Good Oral Health is a Key Component to Overall Fitness
Focusing on your oral health seamlessly leads to better overall and physical fitness. Once you become focused on attaining your oral health goals, like flossing every day and brushing for two minutes two times a day, your mind will already be more in-tune to achieving larger goals, like going on runs or maintaining a healthy diet! Making healthier choices for your oral health, like drinking water instead of sugary juices, are healthier choices for your body’s overall well-being, and will only make you feel encouraged to pursue further goals.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the energy you’re committing to oral resolutions rather than those in which you might see immediate results, consider the double-duo your body is getting through your commitment to bettering your health and wellness for both your body and your mouth! Oral wellness resolutions can quickly become a part of your regular wellness routine, and before you know it, you’ll be a healthier person on your way to a much happier 2017!
Remember to make your resolutions fun and attainable by taking small steps towards a greater goal! If you find yourself struggling to cut back on coffee, or if you just can’t seem to remember to floss every day, give yourself a break by reminding yourself that every day you achieve a small goal is one day closer to optimal health for the whole year.
Call 510-243-0213 today for tips, tricks, and support with your oral health resolutions, and to schedule an appointment with Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas for your next oral exam.
Give Yourself the Gift of Good Oral Health this Holiday
Oral Health El Sobrante
You’ve probably written to Santa a time or two this holiday season to convince him that you should be on his Nice List this year, but would your dentist agree? It’s not always easy to stay away from sweets during the holidays, and some people might find it difficult to schedule time for tooth-brushing with all the gifts to be wrapped and the holiday cheer to be spread, but there are a few things you can do to give yourself the gift of a healthy smile all season long!
Be Smart with your Sweets
Just like any time of the year, holiday sugars in candy and cookies help plaque and cavity-causing bacteria destroy the enamel in your mouth. When you indulge this holiday, try and eat sweets along with your other meals, rather than snacking throughout the day, to minimize the time period acid is allowed to develop in your mouth. If you’re hosting a holiday party, or if you’re asked to bring a dish along to a family get-together, opt for healthier options like veggie trays or cheese boards rather than chocolates or gingerbread snacks.
Keep Yourself in a Routine
Don’t let the stress of the holidays break you from your good habits! If you have a regular brushing and flossing schedule down before the chaos of December and the New Year strikes, you should be in good shape to maintain a healthy smile all winter long. Keeping time to calm and collect yourself is important, especially during times of high stress, and you should make sure you have time to unwind at the end of every day to avoid picking up negative habits, like teeth grinding or stress-snacking, due to holiday overload. If you find yourself getting stressed out with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, consider talking to Dr. Perez-Salinas about a custom night guard to keep you from grinding your teeth.
Most Importantly, Don’t Forget About your Dentist!
The holidays can be a very busy time, but make sure you’re not too busy to keep up on your regular visits to Dr. Perez-Salinas. The best gift you can give to the whole team at Advanced Dentistry is an oral exam and cleaning appointment just in time to ring in the New Year.
Good oral health is the gift that you can give yourself this holiday. Call 510-243-0213 today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas, so she doesn’t have to call Santa while he’s checking his list a second time.
Could You Have Gum Disease?
Oral Hygiene El Sobrante
Bad breath, aching jaw, painful chewing, and swollen gums — sound familiar? It might surprise you to learn that hundreds of Americans suffer from gum disease, or periodontal disease, and if these painful symptoms remind you of your daily life, you may be one of those hundred.
Addressing and correcting your gum disease before it becomes detrimental to the overall health and wellness of your mouth is crucial. Our mouths are full of bacteria that cause plaque on teeth, and if left to develop, this plaque can quickly cause inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis. Gingivitis has mild symptoms, and can often be treated through regular brushing and flossing.
If left untreated, the swelling and redness of gingivitis worsens, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth, and this is known as periodontitis. As the gums pull away from the teeth, the pockets created often fill with bacteria; the body’s natural response is to fight off this bacteria, and consequently creates a situation in which the body begins breaking down bone and tissues surrounding the area. The destruction in and around the tooth can become so detrimental that the tooth must be extracted.
Although most people don’t show signs of gum disease until their 30s or 40s, some lifestyle risk factors can increase gum sensitivity and therefore increase the chances of early or accelerated gum disease.
These factors include:
Hormonal changes in women
It’s important to visit Dr. Perez-Salinas regularly for oral exams and cleanings, but when should you consider an immediate appointment to address the possibility of gum disease?
Common symptoms of gum disease include:
Unwavering bad breath
Red or swollen, tender or bleeding gums
Loose or sensitive teeth
Receding gums or teeth that appear longer
These symptoms could be signs of a serious problem, and should be evaluated by Dr. Perez-Salinas as soon as they are discovered.
Don’t become another victim of periodontitis! For more information about periodontitis prevention and treatment, call 510-243-0213 to schedule an appointment with your El Sobrante dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas today.
